'Chineasy' is not, by any means, a book for learning Chinese, as most of its critics (judging from the negative reviews here and elsewhere) seem to believe. This fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose and function of this book can be blamed squarely on the author and publishers for promoting it as such (in TED talks, etc.), taking a charming little concept and hyping it up well out of proportion.

Chineasy is a book full of Chinese characters and illustrations designed to make learning to read Chinese characters fun and easy. Each character is incorporated into a drawing to help illustrate the meaning. Initially, I had fun trying to understand the characters and the meanings. It felt like solving a puzzle. However, the novelty wore off quickly. I did find it interesting that even though I did learn a number of Chinese characters, I still have no idea how to say any of the words.

This is such a fun way to approach Chinese writing in an original and creative way. The author presents the most commonly occurring characters as visual building blocks and then shows how they evolve into phrases when placed next to other characters. The illustrations are gorgeous and a book for everyone really who is interested in learning some rudimentary Chinese!

Hmmmm. I was intrigued by a short video I saw on the WSJournal site, but this method is less useful than I thought it would be. Do I really think I'll need the characters for ' mermaid' or ' morality'? Plus, many of the mnemonic devices she suggests are cumbersome. Finally, I'm not sold on the concept that learning big groups of words that have the same root characters is really helpful for those who want to get by in China. I probably should have spent the $15 on apps that read characters or.more

Makes me fall in love again with the beauty of Sinosphere cultures.
As someone who has just moved to China, I think Chineasy is brilliant.
It's not about learning to read Chinese for me (I think I will try to walk before I can run) but about understanding what it's about. I find it gives me a great insight into the culture and helps me to get to know the people I work with by being interested in their way of living. At the same time, it is helping me to recognise some basic characters which is pretty handy.
A beautiful, fun and insightful book.

‘Chineasy’ is a beautiful book, containing some 400 traditional and simplified Chinese characters. I just can't stress enough how great the book and its images look.
But its content is pretty useless.
You might be able to remember some characters, get a bit a hang of the system, but it simply doesn't provide enough background information. As other reviewers pointed out: it is an art project. Excellent concept. Execution not so much.
Firstly, there are a lot of totally useless characters in here ('gallbladder'? really?). Secondly, too many of the visual mnemonics are just drawn on top of a figure which won't really help you remember them. Mainly I found this a problem when a character was just slapped on top of a face ('woman', 'small', 'construction', etc.).
Would love to see a version 2.0 taking the feedback above into account.

Bought this for my daughter (6) who loves anything Chinese. A fantastic introduction to Chinese for a young kid. The illustrations are great and the notes about the history behind the characters lead to great discussions.

This is a difficult book to review because it is not a book that you ever really finish. It is more of a guide to keep around and inspect at random, or when one feels challenged to bone up on a difficult language.

This is a great book for people who are just getting started with Chinese characters and want something that's not too intimidating. Two notes of caution: (1) don't buy this if you're hoping for a rigorous treatment of the Chinese language (or even if you hope to be able write a basic letter in Chinese). You'll need something else for that. This is more about getting your feet wet with some characters and with some aspects of the Chinese writing system. (2) Be aware that the author goes back and.more
Chineasy presents ShaoLan Hsueh’s delightfully simple (and undeniably cute) system for quickly understanding the basic building blocks of written Chinese. In collaboration with illustrator Noma Bar, Hsueh has developed a set of illustrations that match wonderfully with the Chinese characters that they represent and so act as an incredibly effective study aid when it comes to recognising and remembering key Chinese words and phrases. While I’m still far, far from fluent, Chineasy has certainly gi.more

All the Characters the book covered are all amazing with nice designs to demonstrate the word meanings.
This is a super amazing way to remember common characters and words following their building blocks.
For example : 人 ren : means person, the main building blocks to form :
从 :to follow
众 :the crowd
大人 : adult
夫人 : the wife
and countless of other examples.
-1 star because it should have another sequels to cover other commonly used characters.

This book got me excited about learning characters! It is easy to understand, funny, and informative at the same time. I wish the book could be changed (reprinted). For example, characters on pg. 107 are not clear in the picture because they're black. On pg. 120, in the brown box, it's difficult to read the words because it's in black font. Same thing applies to pg. 171. I think the font should be changed to white or a lighter color. Thank you very much for creating this book! I enjoyed learning.more
Makes learning Chinese more fun. So you just don't copy down a character and memorize. Every time I cant remember what a character means I think back to see if this book has a picture for it. I just used it as a book on the side to help my Chinese grow better. I first saw it on Pinterest and then I ran into the TED talk about it.

It's an interesting book, but I can only recommend it for people with a passing interest in the Chinese languages. Anyone looking to seriously study Chinese will not find this book so useful once they master the basics.

Interesting and useful, although I got a feeling it is closer to the Taiwanese way of writing than to the main land Mandarin. Still, it is creative and imaginative. I enjoyed reading it!

Cute, but basically useless. Making images around the characters is inspiring, yet hardly original. And there should be at least two editions - simplified and traditional, not both - that is hardly helpful to beginners. Take a look elsewhere (Heisig, Matthews, Jing-Hua Yin) and use Skritter, THAT really works /and it is testified by many succesful learners already/.

I absolutely loved this book.
Easy to read explanations that make learning Chinese characters simple and fun. This guide is just that, a guide, and intended to be used with a combination of other learning materials.
Hsueh is a visionary, and I will be keenly looking out for more of her work!

A beautiful book, and a lot of fun to read. I wouldn't say it makes Chinese easy exactly, but it introduces some of the characters in a fun way.

Very easy and fun way to learn Chinese (Mandarine characters and Pinyin), with some analogies to make the ideas relatable
This book served well as a companion for my chinese class. I'm not struggling as bad as my classmates with chinese characters. I count that as a win.
This book is better than the 2nd one (Chineasy Everyday)
but these 2 points are still valid
1) BPMF/phonetic - for a taiwan-born author , she did not use BPMF system ,used for children to learn, and opted for pinyin.i am a big fan of the BPMF system -- as I grew up in the west learning it -- because its
1a) unique (and obviously has a phonetic mapping)
1b) doesn't rely on teh the romanicized system
1c) makes the writing system even more pretty .latin appearing beside chinese writing is UGLY.more

Really useful as an aid for memorising characters, but definitely needs to be used in conjunction with another resource that teaches sentence structure, grammar etc, not just characters.
Nice introduction to reading characters and compound characters. The illustrations make the characters more memorable. There is a lot to learn to speak Chinese, this book provides vocabulary in a nice way. How to use the vocabulary is a different story.

Chineasy Ted Talk
Visually, I cannot fault this book. It is colourful and elegant and the designs themselves are ingenious. Nor can I fault it for not teaching me how to read Chinese. However, it must be said that, of course, it did not. Its a problem with the language that the images do not really clarify as well or often as one might hope.
Its a fun way of introducing a few words in a daunting foreign script, but just be warned that this method will not 'unlock' the characters as it seems it might when flicking.more

It's easy to critisise a book of this nature because it will never do what every one wants, however what it does do it does very well.
Ok here's what it isn't:
It isn't a dictionary. (Although it does have words and their pinyin and characters)
It isn't a guide to speaking (Although it does have phrases that you may find useful and certainly there are enough words for you to have basic conversations).
And maybe that's why after 2 hours or so of reading it that I'm struggling to see its purpose.

Chinese writing has always been such an enigma for me, so when I first came across this concept via a TED talk (shared on social media), I was hooked. It was a while before I bought the book (it was quite expensive for me), but eventually I treated myself. And what a treat!

More fun than useful
I originally saw Chineasy during a TEDtalk last year and was intrigued. I plan on moving to China soon and have been having trouble learning a significant amount of characters. I immediately preordered it on Amazon and eagerly awaited to download on me kindle. I quickly skimmed through the book and it did have lots of illustrations. My problem is that it's more style than substance.
